The term amide is used in chemistry for compounds that can be formally derived from the basic substance ammonia. In the case of amides, individual atoms or groups of atoms in the ammonia have been replaced by other compounds. There are two types of amides, covalent and ionic amides. | Industrially important amides are, for example, dimethylamide, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and sodium amide.
